Project Clean House

On 11th Dec 2010, 50 DARE youths and parents from NCC took up mops and buckets for a major clean up. Their mission: to improve the living conditions of the elderly living alone in a public housing estate in the North Bridge Road area.

The clean up made many DARE youths realise how fortunate they are. “I am now grateful I live in such a clean and comfortable home,” said Alyssa Pek, 14. “I definitely understand the amount of housework my mum has to do to maintain our home!” Volunteers led the elderly in Cantonese worship songs, and all had a great time of fellowship. Two precious residents among the beneficiaries also accepted Christ that day.The meaningful event ended with a fruitful sharing session among parents and youths.

“It was heart-warming to see our youths waking up so early on a Saturday morning for this community project,” said Anna Cheng, a Zone Executive from NCC’s Youth Ministry. “The elderly were grateful for their assistance and for spending time with them.”

An Experience To Treasure

You are never too young to be a blessing to others. That was what 13-year old Jonathan Pong from The Zone’s DARE Ministry, learnt after volunteering at Discovering Our Treasure on 11 December 2010.

Over 34 NCC families gathered to bless 30 underprivileged children from New Town Primary School with a fun day of games at the Singapore Discovery Centre — treasure hunt style!

But the day’s highlight proved to be lunch at McDonald’s. “When the children heard they were having McDonald’s for lunch, they screamed!” said Zone Executive, Elizabeth Wei.

“It was a real treat for them. Many of the children wanted to pack their meals back for their families instead of eating their lunch,” she said. Thoughtfully, the volunteers prepared extra meal sets so each child could bring an extra MacDonald’s meal home.

“This was one of the most meaningful events I have participated in,” Jonathan concluded.

A Haven-ly Christmas

On 26 November 2010, over 70 members of NCC’s Chinese Ministry visited Peacehaven Nursing Home in Changi to spread Christmas cheer to the elderly residents.

“The residents enjoyed themselves very much. The smiles on their faces say it all!” said Benny Tan, a volunteer coordinator from Peacehaven.

Conducted in Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese, the day’s activities included games, birthday celebrations and a praise and worship session. One joyous male resident even whipped out his harmonica and attempted to follow the tunes!

NCC volunteers also came forward to share their testimonies before giving a salvation call. A total of 22 salvations and rededications were made that day.

“I believe the residents have been blessed by your presence, words of comfort and prayer support,” Benny added gratefully. Praise the Lord!
