Grace-Filled Journey To Being Cancer Free

More than a year ago, I was diagnosed with HER2-positive (Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2-positive) breast cancer—a more aggressive type of breast cancer. It all began when I suddenly felt a lump on my right breast. Everything moved so quickly. I had to start chemotherapy to shrink the 4cm lump, followed by a mastectomy.

To be honest, I was in shock. I was afraid. As a single person and the primary caregiver to both my elderly parents, I felt overwhelmed. I worried about the future. Who would care for them if I wasn’t well? What would happen to me?

During that season, I continued attending church services. One particular Sunday, I vividly remember Pastor Prince calling out to those diagnosed with breast cancer in the right breast to stand up. At that moment, I hesitated. I told myself, “He’s probably talking to the people at The Star, not here at Marina Bay Sands.”

But God knows our every thought. Right after I said that in my heart, Pastor Prince added, “This is also for those at the Marina Bay Sands venue.” I was stunned. In that moment, I knew that God was speaking directly to me. My tears flowed as I stood up, and immediately, two or three sisters surrounded me to pray. One of them embraced me, and I couldn’t stop crying. It felt as if Jesus Himself was wrapping me in His arms and whispering, “I see you. I am with you.” That was just the beginning of how God began to show His grace in my life.

Even before I knew about the diagnosis, my youngest sister, who is married, had to move back in temporarily while waiting for her new flat. It was as if God had already arranged for someone to be there for me during my recovery. He truly went ahead of me.

At work, my boss, without hesitation, allowed me to work from home throughout the year and even reassigned much of my workload. Despite everything, he gave me the highest bonus I’ve ever received—almost five months’ worth of salary!

And here’s the biggest miracle: after my treatment, my oncologist and surgeon told me they could not find any cancer cells. The lump had disappeared, and my lymph nodes were clear! Praise Jesus!

I remember declaring Psalm 91: “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.” And it truly didn’t. His Word became real and alive in me. All glory to Jesus.

Some time ago, my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter came down with a high fever and was hospitalised for what the doctors believed were flu viruses. However, after two nights, she became unresponsive and started gasping for air. She was later discovered to have a severe streptococcal infection. Her heart, lungs and kidneys were shutting down, and she was placed on life support.

At one point, the doctors could only tell me, “Your daughter is very ill,” while showing me X-rays of her lungs, which appeared completely white. They even arranged for a social worker to prepare us for the worst.

The doctors explained that if she did not improve, she would need to undergo a procedure to be placed on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine—a heart and lung bypass. They warned us of the risks involved, including possible brain bleeding, but said it was the only way to buy her more time.

I was devastated. When her condition worsened and I had to sign the consent form for the ECMO procedure, I remembered two of my Christian friends and asked them to pray with me. During the operation, my friends and I sat in the waiting room praying and worshipping God.

After the procedure, my daughter remained in the ICU. During that time, the church’s healing team visited regularly to pray and partake of the holy Communion with her. At a healing service, Pastor Henry also prayed for my daughter and declared that she was on her way to recovery. Pastor Mei from the Rock Kidz Ministry encouraged me to declare the finished work of Jesus over her as well. I spoke scriptures over my daughter and sang worship songs to her, and each time I did, she would respond by moving.

Days later, my daughter was successfully taken off the ECMO machine. Her kidneys began to recover, and dialysis was no longer needed. However, a later scan revealed bleeding on the brain, and we rallied the prayer warriors again. At the next scan, the bleeding was gone!

My daughter eventually underwent lung surgery to remove the remaining infection. After that, her fever broke, and she was transferred out of the ICU. One doctor told me, “She is a miracle. Whatever prayers you and your friends were praying, I think it worked.”

My daughter was discharged about six weeks after she was admitted. Through it all, the Lord was with us. He healed my daughter completely. All glory to God!

Last year, my husband and I were expecting our firstborn. On the day my water bag broke, we had just seen our obstetrician that morning and all was well, so we packed our bags and called a taxi.

As we got into the taxi, I experienced a massive gush of fluid and began bleeding bright red blood. We arrived at the hospital around 2am and, to our horror, the nurse attending to us could not detect any heartbeat.

An obstetrician who happened to be in the hospital came to assess me and immediately performed an emergency C-section. When I woke up from the surgery, I learned that I had suffered a placental abruption. My son had lost a significant amount of blood and had been deprived of oxygen for a period of time.

When he was delivered, he showed no signs of life. But the paediatrician resuscitated him and, by God’s grace, my son came back to life. All the doctors and nurses later told us we were very “lucky”. If we had arrived even a minute later, he would likely not have survived. But we knew it was not luck, but God.

A month later, when we visited the obstetrician who delivered our baby, we learned that he is also a Christian. He was not supposed to be in the hospital at that hour. He had come in for another emergency case and felt prompted to stay.

After birth, our baby stayed in the hospital for seven days. During this time, we were deeply strengthened by our church family from the Outreach Ministry, who prayed relentlessly for our son. The leaders also partook of the holy Communion on his behalf. His lungs improved so quickly that, two weeks after his discharge, he no longer needed oxygen at all. We were worried that his brain or organs had been damaged due to the lack of oxygen. But praise God, his brain scans showed that all was well.

Today, our boy is a healthy. His weight is trending above his growth curve, and he is meeting all his developmental milestones. The paediatrician has declared that he is past the initial birth trauma.

All praise to Jesus! We believe Jesus brought our baby back to life. We are also so thankful for our church family, who stood with us and supported us during this difficult time. We truly believe their prayers played a part in our son’s miraculous recovery. Jesus is indeed real and alive!
